Maximum amount of credit to business or economic interest group
The Ley del Sistema Financiero (Financial System Act) provides that the maximum any financial institution may place for a company or economic interest group will be 20% of its capital.
The Banco de Costa Rica has the highest capital of the country, with $150 million.
However, our internal rules of banking prudence have established 7% capital as maximum credit. Therefore, the maximum loan is currently about $11.0 million.
For higher credits, in several cases we have adopted the figure of the agent bank where the BCR syndicate the total credit with other financial institutions and the client does meet their total financing needs.
Allocation of Interest rate
The BCR assigns interest rates according to the operation risk. That risk is determined based on the client´s financial information and according to other parameters like nature of the guarantee, company´s buiness risk, etc.
The rates in dollars are based on the Prime Rate Rate (TPR), and the rates in colones on the Basic Passive Rate (TBP) established by the BCCR Economic Division.
According to these concepts, below there are the rate range tables by risk level..
