Assistance Service is not provided by BCR but, by Grupo Especializado de Asistencia (GEA) de Costa Rica (Specialized Assistance Group of Costa Rica).

BCR will not assume any liability regarding any relationship between cardholders and GEA de Costa Rica.  Eventual claims and complaints shall be directly submitted to service vendor without any action on BCR’s part.

Theft and Fraud Insurance

General Conditions

As cardholder, you must be sure that your card and additional cardholders shall be protected and covered by the new INS insurance policy which offers:

WHAT DOES IT PROTECT?

In the event of theft or fraud with your credit card, insurance shall cover 90% of goods and service purchases made by unauthorized individuals within the following 72 hours previous to the date and time in which you inform BCR of loss or theft of your card. Other 10% left shall be assumed by cardholder.

Fraud made by third party using your card without authorization shall be 90% covered during the 30 calendar days previous to fraud discovery; other 10% shall be assumed by your account.

Credit card shall be covered while cardholder shops online. Upon notice to BCR of fraud, insurance policy shall not cover any additional charge due to card misuse.

Maximum limits of coverage depend upon credit card type:

In the event that granted credit is lower than mentioned, such amount shall become the maximum amount covered.

HOW DO I GET THE SECURED CARD PROGRAM?

Both main and additional cards shall be eligible to be insured as of time of activation while customer shall be up to date with BCR credit card payments. 

Secured Card Program shall start as of activation time. It is important to review and check if you do not see the insurance charge in your statement of account, inform us since that fact means that you are not covered.

If your payments are delayed, the Bank at its discretion may interrupt your coverage monthly charge to the INS (Instituto Nacional de Seguros) with no liability for the Bank or INS.

In addition; your credit card shall be covered while you make transactions online. We do recommend that you only shop just at certified sites.  Those sites show an icon as follows:

WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE IN THE EVENT OF THEFT, LOSS OR FRAUD?

In the event of fraud, theft or loss or when discovering transactions not made by you, you shall immediately inform Banco de Costa Rica calling to its number 2284-6600 and in writing within the following three days as of time of acknowledge fraud, theft or loss.  Banco de Costa Rica shall determine loss amount and shall verify fraud directly contacting INS for your convenience.  Once amount is determined, money shall be reimbursed within a month.

SECURED CARD PROGRAM SHALL NOT BE EFFECTIVE IN THE EVENT THAT:

  • You are able to obtain a reimbursement through other means.

Financial loss due to fraud or transactions made by cardholder or any other individual than the cardholder.

  • Fraud or transactions made by other than cardholder but with his authorization.
  • Card loss as a result of fraud.
  • Cash advance under any circumstance or method but when cardholder may prove repression on him.
  • Loss as a result of civil liability-contractual or extra-contractual.
  • Incurring in financial costs as a result of card fraud, loss or theft.
  • Any undiscovered charge within the 30 calendar days of the statement of account record.  In the event of a charge series, last charge shall be taken as reference date.
  • Any direct or indirect loss due to: 
  • War actions, declared or not, civil or international war, rebellion, mutiny, terrorism, strike or popular insurrection.
  • Catastrophes originated by nuclear reactions, forfeiture or expropriation.  

The Instituto Nacional de Seguros keeps its replacement right up to indemnity amount against individuals or corporations which had made charges to your credit card. In the event that INS recovers an amount which exceeds the indemnity amount, the remainder amount up to the amount covered by you, shall be returned to you through the Banco de Costa Rica.
