History
Banco de Costa Rica was founded on
April 20th, 1877 under Banco de la Unión name until
1890 when it changed to Banco de Costa Rica. It was created to become the new
banking alternative among those existing ones and whose first tasks were to offer
loans, keep checking accounts, deposits and perform collections among
others. After seven years as of
its foundation, Banco de Costa Rica became the only
one money issuer and first manager of public income through a contract which
was called Soto-Ortuño Contract effective up
to 1896.
Other
economic actions took place along the years up to 1928 when it decentralized
its services creating new branches in Limón and Puntarenas ports.
In
1948, a
Junta Fundadora de la Segunda
República decree
established banking nationalization and Banco de
Costa Rica adhered to it until now. It is an autonomous institution as per
agreement to Article 189 of the Constitution of the Republic of Costa Rica
since 1949.
Recently,
Banco de Costa Rica has devoted to modernize and become
innovative procuring rapid, comfortable customer services through usage of
modern technology.
